Federal Register Notice - USPS New Requirement Concerning Return Addresses

Friday, December 18, 2009

The USPS® has published notice of new mail preparation regulations to be effective January 4, 2010. The new regulation is a result of continuing heightened security measures as related to mail and is consistent with amended regulations of the Universal Postal Union. Effective January 4, 2010, all bulk international mail (IPA and ISAL services of the USPS®) must bear a complete US return address on the mail piece. Pitney Bowes customers who utilize USPS® services exclusively should confirm that their US return address is printed on all mail items.

Further, we recommend that all customers (with the exception of those who utilize Pitney Bowes® Postal Direct services for direct entry into Canada, UK, France and other destinations) should also include their US return address on every item of mail. As world postal administrations continue to seek more visibility to sender identity as additional security for mail the use of return addresses will become more significant. We encourage all mailers to verify that a valid return address appears on their mail pieces to avoid any potential delays. I
